Air Con

Old-Fashioned Cooling

My parents were big believers in air conditioning, even though back in their day it wasn’t quite as widespread. They made sure they had it installed throughout the entire house and then showed off to the neighbours as much as possible. From my non-air-conditioned cupboard underneath the stairs, I could hear sounds of the neighbours being impressed, so it must have been quite a big deal to have that much cooling back then.

I had to stay very quiet because the neighbours weren’t allowed to know that I existed…to them, my parents were childless. ‘Children should be seen and not heard’, such old-fashioned folks! Bless their souls.

Anyway, looks like it’s going to be a hot summer in Sydney. Air conditioning services companies have gotten even better since I was last here. I just came up on a conference, and it seems like there isn’t a single room in the city that isn’t cooled by their services. That might be because I’m only in conference areas and hotel rooms, but still, it’s nice to see that their legacy lives on. Every time I walk into a room with efficient cooling, or a supermarket (they’re always the coldest), I flash back to my childhood. Me, working out in the garden wearing uniform overalls so the neighbours would think I was hired help, and then me coming inside to our wonderfully cooled house, for about seven seconds before I went back in the cupboard. They WERE a good seven seconds though. And we’re talking…ohh, I’ve blocked a lot of it out, but it was a few decades ago now. Air conditioning repairs near Sydney are just as good as they’ve ever been, clearly. Going to have to enjoy them as much as possible before I’m heading back to my stuffy old home.
